Why one Sebastopol area dentist chooses not to use mixed metal dental crowns
Dental crowns are a common restorative solution that we utilize in our office. What sets our practice apart is we choose to provide metal-free porcelain crowns and for good reason. For decades, studies have come out about the potentially dangerous side effects of mixed metal dental solutions. Mixed metal solutions such as amalgam contain mercury which can have negative effects on both oral and overall health. Certain physiological side effects of metal dental restorations can include chronic fatigue, allergic reactions, digestive problems, and low energy levels.
Metal-free, biocompatible dental crowns are a great alternative. They are natural looking and cause no adverse reactions when placed in the mouth.
The process for receiving a biocompatible dental crown is very straight forward. To begin, a dental impression is taken of the tooth and sent to an off-site laboratory for fabrication of the permanent crown. This restoration will be fabricated to match neighboring teeth in the mouth to create a beautiful and natural looking appearance of the smile. A temporary crown can be placed to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is being completed.
Once the final crown is ready, patients can return to the office for final checks and placement. Drs. Senn or Mann will verify proper fit and color to make any final modifications before permanently cementing the crown in place.
For patients who have one or more missing teeth, we also offer dental bridges. Dental bridges utilize one of our biocompatible dental crowns on each side of the gap with an artificial tooth or teeth in the middle. Dental bridges can be supported by either existing natural teeth or crown covered implants. Bridges help patients regain their self-esteem by restoring their smiles, maintaining the proper shape of the face, and reestablishing the ability to chew and speak normally.
Once in place, dental crowns do not require any special care beyond regular oral hygiene. Keep in mind that a crowned tooth does not protect the underlying tooth from decay or gum disease such as gingivitis. Make sure to continue to brush and floss regularly and use an antibacterial mouth wash.
